How do I increase resistance of my heads?
« on: August 12, 2013, 09:54:08 AM »

I made three coils this morning between three and five wraps and each head gives a reading of less than 1.8 ohms.
Wire is Kanthal D 0.2mm.
There is no space to increase the number of wraps so how do I increase the resistance to prolong the life of the coils?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Use a thinner kanthal if you have no room for more coils

Pretty much what colt said.

Although you don't say what the lower resistance is, it might be shoring out as I'd expect 5 wraps to be Clare to 2ohms.

Another thing you can do is increase the wick diameter, meaning longer wires... And more resistance.
I vape like I used to smoke - I prefer to roll my own :)

Why not just run a lower wattage through the coil? It'll be the same effect as having a higher resistance and higher wattage.

Five wraps gives me a 1.6 ohm reading. Reducing voltage reduces the throat hit.
I use 1.5 mm wick, doubled up. I was hoping to get closer to 2.4 ohms.
Not sure what options are left to try.

try using 34 gauge kanthal (0.16mm) that should get you a higher ohm reading

Also kanthal d if I remember correctly has a lower resistance per foot then a1. I will confirm that and add to this post

ok here is some info
Kanthal A1 resistance at 20°C: 45.0 Ohm/m ..... 13.72 Ohm/ft
Kanthal D resistance at 20°C: 42.5 Ohm/m ..... 12.95 Ohm/ft

Does not look like a big difference but its a difference all the same. Try using Kanthal A1.

Hope this helps
