Mesh wick setups
« on: May 14, 2013, 10:31:13 PM »
I was just wondering what setups people use, for example I find the following works well:

2mm dia solid wick, #500 mesh, 4/5 turns 0.2mm Kanthal (1.8Ohm).

my set-up or should I say one of my set-ups is 2mm straw wick 32awg kanthal 4/5 wraps and about 1.8 ohms. But I play about a lot with silica etc. And I vary my resistance to the wick. a thick wick needs more heat to warm up faster.

AC9 running with straw wick using 28awg at 0.8 ohms which I use for menthol or in this case cool orange vapes.

For GVC and other sweeter vapes I use a similar 32awg 1.8 ohms setup because too high a wattage spoils the flavour for me on these.

1.3 to 1.4 ohms is my usual target...  Kanthal grades and number of wraps depends on wick size though...

Same here. Though I do like the 0.9ohm I have in the dripper right now. It's insane.

For most though, yes, I like 1.4ohm if I can get it with 4 wraps. Any fewer wraps I feel doesn't have enough heating area to make good clouds.

I've also gone off the solid wicks a bit. I now always leave at least enough of a tube to get a needle or paper clip down. The #200 mesh is really floppy and you have a hell of job keeping it straight when wrapping otherwise.

My 2.5mm 7/7 wire rope arrived yesterday and I did have a quick play but didn't have enough time to really sort it - just went with a standard mesh wick for the day.

One good thing, the rope is almost impossible to damage in any significant way, so my fumble-fingered attempts to keep small bit of mesh wrapped while also wrapping wire  had no effect on it. A mesh wick would have been all frayed and torn by now.

I'll have another go at it tomorrow.  Sad to say the 2.5mm is too big to fit my new Cobra. but the Mesh Company is going all out on vaping supplies now. Mesh, Wire, Silica and rope all in one place. I'll grab some 2mm 7/19 from them.

Just tried my first SS wick in my EVOD. A total failure. Hardly any vapor and no taste.
The wick must be oxidized correctly as I get no resistance reading across the wick surface.
The head gives me 1.8 ohm reading ( four wraps)
Back to silica wick I go.

Best place for a mesh wick, and the only place I use them, is in a Genesis atomiser...

I tried building a wick and coil again. This time I made the coils tighter around the wick
and it works in a fashion. I would like to know the ideal size of the wick hole, the thickness
of a pin, a small paper clip or a large clip?
I made mine the size of a pin and wonder whether it should be larger.

Using Brasiliero steeped and as someone once said it's chucking it out

Tried a hollow wick in the Nahual last night. I won't do that again  ;D

Why? I've settled on rolling the mesh around a 18awg syringe needle, nice and tight and leave the needle in while wrapping the coil.

Plenty of vapour taste and no problem wicking either. running around 1.0 ohm with 3/2 wraps of .25 wire.
